Having first started with ENT surgery, Dr Palaniappan has more than 20 years experience in managing patients with dizziness, tinnitus and hearing impairment. He obtained the FRCS (Otolaryngology) diploma in 1995 at The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, and began training in Audiovestibular Medicine as a Senior Registrar because of his long-standing interest in hearing and balance-related problems.

He has had a very broad and well-structured training in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiovestibular medicine, which included training in adult and paediatric audiology, neuro-otology, rehabilitation, developmental disorders of speech and language, glue ear and tinnitus clinics. His area of special interest is neuro-otology including tinnitus and balance disorders.

He works at The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital as a full-time consultant in adult audiovestibular medicine & neuro-otology, carrying out four neuro-otology clinics and two audiological rehabilitation clinics per week and once a month special hearing clinic for thalassaemia sufferers.

He regularly teaches in MSc audiological medicine/science and DLO-HNS courses and is also an examiner for the MSc courses. He is involved in research and has published widely and lectured nationally on his areas of expertise. The London Deanery has recently appointed him as Audiovestibular Medicine Training Programme Director.
