MRS DESNÉ MARSTON - PRACTICE MANAGER
Desné Marston has been involved in the London independent healthcare market since enrolling on the administrative bank staff of the then Nuffield-owned Nightingale Hospital whilst still at school. Originally working both on switchboard and reception, she also undertook roles in pharmacy and patient accounts.

After a stint as a photographer's assistant and features writer and having trained in the Arts (The Royal Academy of Music and drama college), she moved to a permanent role at The Fitzroy Nuffield Hospital setting up the Health Screening Unit and running both this and the outpatient department. Following a couple of years as a successful freelance medical secretary she joined a City General Practice as Practice Manager and, after 4 years, moved to a private family General Practice in Chelsea as Practice Manager in 1999. In November 2005 she started in her current post at The Harley Street ENT Clinic.


MRS RHIANNON LAYNE
Rhiannon Layne moved to London from South Wales in 1977 and started work as secretary to the Chairman of a Nigerian Publishing Company. After 5 years she continued her career as a medical secretary in the Nuclear Medicine Department at The Royal Marsden Hospital. She then went on to become PA to the Head of Forensic Pathology at both Charing Cross Hospital and St George’s Hospital before relocating with a team of Private Home Office Forensic Pathologists to Fulham Mortuary spending a total of 16 years in that speciality.

Rhiannon also previously spent 3 years working as PA to two Consultant Neurosurgeons at Charing Cross Hospital and more recently for various Consultants in Accident & Emergency, Breast and Gastro-Intestinal Surgery at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital on a temporary basis before taking up the post of PA to Mr Gerald Brookes at The Harley Street ENT Clinic in May 2005.

MISS KATIE TRACEY
Katie graduated from Durham University in 2006 with a 2:1 degree in Modern Languages and lived for a year in rural Germany using her language skills to teach English to secondary school children. Being the daughter of medical practitioners Katie has always had an interest in medicine and has worked in both administrative and hands-on clinical roles in primary and secondary healthcare settings in the UK, as well as volunteering for work in outpatient department clinics in Malawi. She joined The Harley Street ENT Clinic as PA in June 2008.

MISS EMMA-LOUISE KELLY
Emma-Louise has worked in hospitality for the last six years and during this time she completed a degree in Geography and Tourism at St Mary’s University College Twickenham in July 07. After university Emma-Louise decided to focus her career on medical administration by signing on for a year’s course with Pitman Training at High Holborn to study for a Medical Secretarial Diploma. This involved learning touch/speed and audio typing and studying medical terminology for a short AMSPAR module. She completed her diploma in August 08 while starting with our medical administration team in July 08.

Consultants

MR BHIK KOTECHA
Mr. Bhik Kotecha qualified from Welsh National School of Medicine, Cardiff in 1984 and started his training in Otolaryngology in 1987 in Manchester. He subsequently furthered his training at Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital and at Great Ormond Street Hospital as a Senior Registrar. He has been a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital and at Queens Hospital, Romford since 1995.

He manages most adult and paediatric ENT problems but has developed a special interest in snoring and sleep disorders. Sleep medicine is a relatively new field and has, to date, received very little attention. In order to heighten awareness of problems that patients face with snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, Mr. Kotecha has appeared on BBC Breakfast, BBC World, Anglia TV, The Discovery Channel, GMTV and BBC Radio 4 and has also featured in The Daily Mail. He was awarded the Hospital Doctor Team of the year award for sleep medicine in 2004, has published widely on the subject and lectures internationally at European and World Congresses.

Mr Kotecha is a member of Court of Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the President-Elect (2008) at the Royal Society of Medicine for the Sleep Medicine Section.

MR NITESH PATEL
Mr Nitesh Patel was born in South London. He graduated from Manchester University in 1994 where he was awarded an MBChB degree with honours for his outstanding overall performance, attaining honours in six undergraduate subjects. His basic surgical training was completed in various London hospitals leading to FRCS(Eng) in 1999. He was awarded the Gold Medal by the Royal Society of Medicine for 1st Rank in the National (UK) Intercollegiate examination in ENT Surgery gaining his FRCS(ORL-HNS) in 2005. He obtained the Certificate of Completion of Training from the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (UK) and currently holds substantive NHS consultant posts at Whipps Cross University and Newham University Hospitals in London.

Other awards and achievements include the North Thames London Deanery award for design of the North Thames Otolaryngology trainees' website and the JLO Travelling Fellowship, awarded by the Journal of Laryngology and Otology, to visit the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles. He is an active member of a voluntary service group which was awarded Queens Golden Jubilee award for voluntary groups in the community.

His specialist interests include ear problems, hearing and balance disorders, Eustachian tube problems (after flights or hyperbaric oxygen treatment), nose and sinus disorders, children's ENT disorders, voice problems and treatments for snoring.

He regularly teaches and examines both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is a Faculty member and invited speaker for several courses held at Whipps Cross University Hospital and the Institute of Laryngology and Otology and is also Faculty member for the Royal College of Surgeons in England's eSTEP™ programme. He is a registered assessor of trainee surgeons with Healthcare Assessment and Training (HcAT).

MR AZHAR SHAIDA
Mr Azhar Shaida was awarded a scholarship to Pembroke College, Cambridge University to read Medicine in 1984. He transferred to Oxford University in 1987 to complete his clinical training and qualified as a doctor in 1990. He then trained in Oxford, London and Cambridge and obtained the FRCS in General Surgery. He decided to specialize in ENT surgery and trained on the East Anglia rotation, obtaining the FRCS (Otolaryngology) and the FRCS-ORL. He attended a number of leading hospitals in Europe and Australia to complete his training, and was appointed as consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon at the prestigious Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in 2002. He also provides a full general ENT service at Newham General Hospital. He received his MD degree for his thesis on matrix metalloproteinases in rhinitis from the University of London in 2004.

Areas of special interest are general ear surgery, cochlear implants and paediatric ENT surgery. His research interests include the restoration of hearing, advances in cochlear implant surgery and other implantable hearing devices. He reviews articles for the Journal of Laryngology and Otology.

He is actively involved in teaching, and regularly lectures on courses at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital and at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

DR RUDRAPATHY PALANIAPPAN
Having first started with ENT surgery, Dr Palaniappan has more than 20 years experience in managing patients with dizziness, tinnitus and hearing impairment. He obtained the FRCS (Otolaryngology) diploma in 1995 at The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, and began training in Audiovestibular Medicine as a Senior Registrar because of his long-standing interest in hearing and balance-related problems.

He has had a very broad and well-structured training in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiovestibular medicine, which included training in adult and paediatric audiology, neuro-otology, rehabilitation, developmental disorders of speech and language, glue ear and tinnitus clinics. His area of special interest is neuro-otology including tinnitus and balance disorders.

He works at The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital as a full-time consultant in adult audiovestibular medicine & neuro-otology, carrying out four neuro-otology clinics and two audiological rehabilitation clinics per week and once a month special hearing clinic for thalassaemia sufferers.

He regularly teaches in MSc audiological medicine/science and DLOHNS courses and is also an examiner for the MSc courses. He is involved in research and has published widely and lectured nationally on his areas of expertise. The London Deanery has recently appointed him as Audiovestibular Medicine Training Programme Director.

MISS NATALIE MARIN - Audiovestibular Scientist
Natalie Marin has been working in the field of Audiology since 2001 and has a special interest in Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation.

After achieving outstanding results in her final examinations Natalie was awarded a scholarship to study at The University of Cape Town's medical school (Groote Schuur Hospital) and qualified in 2000 with a BSc Degree in Logopaedics (Speech-Language Therapy and Audiology). She moved to the UK in early 2001 and began working as a long-term Locum Audiologist at various hospitals where she performed a wide range of Audiological and Vestibular assessments for patients with dizziness or balance problems. In 2003 she became the Chief Audiologist at the Cromwell Hospital, working with both Adult and Paediatric patients in Audio-Vestibular Testing and undertaking the management of patients with BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). She also conducted ABRs under sedation for the Portland Hospital's Cochlear Implant patients and ran a school hearing-screening program at a number of schools in the South London area. She joined the Harley Street ENT Clinic in July 2004.

Natalie is registered as an Audio-Vestibular Scientist with the RCCP (Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists) and is a member of the BSA (British Society of Audiology).

MISS ELLEN JONES - Audiovestibular Scientist
Ellen Jones has been working in the field of Audiology since 1999, working for the NHS, the Metropolitan Police and in the private sector. Ellen became a qualified audiologist in 2001 and graduated in 2004 from The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital after a 4-year MSc Clinical Science degree with specialism in Audiology. She then went on to achieve an MSc in Audiological Science from University College London in 2006.

Ellen has extensive experience in Audiology and performs a wide range of audiological and vestibular diagnostic tests for all age groups. Having been a locum at The Harley Street ENT Clinic for a few years Ellen joined the team on a more permanent footing in 2008. She has been registered with the professional bodies RCCP and BAA for several years.

MISS JANE O'CONNELL - Specialist ENT Nurse
Jane O'Connell trained in London at The Royal Free Hospital and qualified as a Registered Nurse in March 2002. Her aim in her nursing career has been to gain as much experience as possible in many nursing fields and to this end she travelled to Australia after graduation. Here she worked for a year in a variety of settings but predominantly in the Neurology Unit at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Returning to her home town of Cork in Ireland she worked at Cork University Hospital in the Surgical and Medical wards and also in Accident & Emergency. Jane returned to the UK in 2006 where she worked in Respiratory Research and District Nursing before joining The Harley Street ENT Clinic in March 2007.


Therapists

MR GARY WOOD - Speech and Language Therapist
Mr Gary Wood qualified in 1994 from The Central School of Speech and Drama with a BSc (Hons) degree in Speech and Language Pathology and since that time has been working in the fields of Voice Disorders and Voice Restoration. He has therefore developed a great deal of experience with many professional voice user group such as singers, actors, teachers and barristers. Further training has gained him experience in swallowing disorders, head and neck cancer care and he is also an international advisor for post-laryngectomy patients, including the use of Blom-Singer Prostheses.

As well as being heavily involved in the pre- and post-graduate training of Speech & Language Therapists, Nurses and Doctors at City University and University Collage London, he also is part of the faculty of the only MSc courses in Voice run at UCL. His teaching and research has been presented internationally and nationally and he is a regular visiting lecturer at many Universities.

Gary is the Lead Consultant Speech and Language Therapist working The Harley Street ENT Clinic and also works at The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital (London). He is registered as a Speech and Language Therapist with both The Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists and The Health Professions Council.

PROF RENATA WHURR - Speech and Language Therapist
After training and qualifying as a clinical Speech and Language Therapist in London, Prof Whurr obtained a PhD in Psychology and an MSc in Human Commuication, both at the University of London, and an MPhil Psychology at the University of Nottingham. She has also been awarded a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology from the Open University and is currently in her second year of an MA degree course in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Regent's College, London.

She is a visiting professor at University College London and also lectures at various institutions across the UK. She has developed an international reputation in her specialist areas and has lectured in many countries.

She has had extensive clinical experience in acquired communication disorders in adults, having worked as Senior Clinical Speech and Language Therapist and Head of Department in the NHS at several of the major teaching hospitals in London for many years. Treating adults and adolescents, she has dealt with a range of acquired neurological voice, speech, language and swallowing disorders usually caused by stroke, head injury, or progressive neurological disease. Although specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of a voice condition named "spasmodic dysphonia", she covers the entire range of disorders of the voice.

DR MAROUSA PAVLOU - Vestibular Therapist
Following her BA in Biology and Classical Civilisation undertaken at Boston University, Boston, Marousa Pavlou completed a Degree in Physiotherapy at the Technological Educational Institution of Lamia, Greece before beginning her PhD in Neurological Studies at Imperial College London, which was completed in 2005.

One of her main achievements has been the development of successful new and advanced high-tech rehabilitation approaches for patients with refractory dizziness due to a peripheral vestibular disorder. By using customised vestibular exercises combined with optokinetic stimulation, dizziness and visual vertigo symptoms improve significantly. This was done in collaboration with Professor Adolfo Bronstein at Imperial College London and Dr Rosalyn Davies at the Department of Neuro-otology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. The work has generated huge interest in both Europe and the United States of America, with hospitals on both sides requesting use of the visual motion DVD.

Research plays a major role in Marousa's life and she is constantly involved in projects, for many of which she is the principal investigator or supervisor. She has been a lecturer in Physiotherapy since 2003, teaching on the BSc and MSc courses at King's College London.

Marousa has had many articles published in peer reviewed journals and conference abstract books and has presented her work at both national and international conferences and seminars.
