Airway
The airway is the part of the respiratory system that forms a pathway between the air that we breathe in from the atmosphere and the alveoli in the lungs. The airway begins at the mouth or nose and accesses the trachea via the pharynx and then down to the lungs via the bronchi. Inhaled particles stick to mucus and these are removed by the cilia that are contained along the surfaces of the airway. The airway also contains cells within the tissue called macrophages that protect from infection by engulfing inhaled particles and bacteria.
