Fat-plug Myringoplasty (Ear drum repair)
Ear Treatment Options
Getting the right treatment for ear problems can have a major impact on your health and quality of life by relieving symptoms such as pain, smelly discharge, itching and hearing loss. An experienced ENT specialist at The Harley Street clinic can arrange and perform various tests and procedures to tackle conditions affecting the ears. The doctor can advise you on the best mangement options and explain these in detail, so that you know what to expect during your treatment at the ENT clinic.
Medical treatment
Many ear conditions respond well to oral or topical medications, including tablets or ear drops. For severe discomfort, we may prescribe pain relief stronger than standard over-the-counter options. In some cases, especially with acute infections, antibiotics may be given via injection during your visit to the clinic.
Outer ear conditions are typically treated with antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drops and ointments. Middle ear issues may require decongestant or antibiotic tablets, as well as steroid or decongestant nasal sprays. For inner ear conditions, treatment may involve anti-inflammatory, vasodilator, antiviral or antibiotic tablets, or medication delivered directly into the middle ear through intratympanic infusions.
Outer ear lumps (lesions)
Small cysts or lumps in or around the outer ear can usually be removed under local anaesthetic in one of our minor procedure rooms. Once removed, the lesion is typically sent for laboratory analysis to confirm the diagnosis.
Microsuction
Microsuction is a precise method used to remove wax, discharge, dead skin or other debris from the ear canal using a microscope and a small suction device. This quick outpatient procedure is often well tolerated, though some patients may experience brief discomfort or mild dizziness. Ear syringing is not recommended when an infection is present or if the eardrum is perforated or thin.
Removal of foreign bodies
Foreign objects lodged in the ear canal, such as cotton bud tips or small plastic toys, can be safely removed using fine instruments or microsuction. This is done with care to avoid damaging the ear canal or eardrum.
Ear wicks and dressings
When infection causes the ear canal to become swollen and narrow, a cellulose ear wick may be placed to allow antibiotic drops to reach the affected area more effectively. After surgery, ear dressings may be used to reduce swelling and protect the site of the operation.
Myringotomy and grommet insertion
A myringotomy is a minor surgical procedure to relieve pressure or drain fluid from the middle ear. A small tube, or grommet, is often inserted to ventilate the middle ear and improve hearing. In adults, this is usually done under local anaesthetic. In children, it is commonly performed under general anaesthetic.
Removal of grommets
If grommets do not fall out naturally or become blocked, they can be removed using microsuction or fine surgical instruments. The small hole in the eardrum usually closes on its own within a few weeks.
Intratympanic infusions
Intratympanic infusion involves placing medication directly into the middle ear through the eardrum. This is performed under topical local anaesthetic and may be used to treat conditions such as sudden hearing loss or inner ear balance disorders.
Fat-plug myringoplasty (eardrum repair)
If a perforation in the eardrum persists and causes recurrent infections or hearing loss, it may be repaired using a fat-plug myringoplasty. This is often carried out under local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting, allowing for a quicker recovery.
Hearing aids and ear devices
Patients who require hearing support can be referred to the Harley Hearing Centre, located within our clinic. After a detailed hearing assessment, the audiology team will recommend suitable hearing aids or ear protection devices tailored to your specific hearing profile.
