An established ENT Consultant with over 30 years’ clinical experience, Dr James Fairley graduated from the University of London in 1978, with a BSc in Pharmacology. He then carried out drug development research in Sandoz, Basel, Switzerland and a Core Clinical Clerkship at Harvard University, before qualifying as a doctor from St Thomas’ in 1981, winning the Hadden Prize in Microbiology.
Following postgraduate medical and surgical training at St Thomas’, University College and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in London, he gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Otolaryngology) in 1988. As Senior Registrar at the Sheffield Children’s and Royal Hallamshire Hospitals, he achieved his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 1993 while working on his Master of Surgery thesis, based on the Nasal Research Clinic which he founded in 1990. He also developed skills in complex middle ear surgery and stapes surgery with a TWJ fellowship to the Causse Clinic, Beziers, France. Since 1993 he has been a substantive Consultant ENT Surgeon to East Kent Hospitals University Foundation NHS Trust.
Dr Fairley has a wide range of clinical interests, in both adult and children’s care. Offering diagnosis and assessment in all aspects of ENT/Head and Neck Surgery, his particular areas of specialist expertise include ear problems, otitis externa, otitis media, cholesteatoma and mastoid surgery, including KTP LASER treatment, stapedectomy, Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (titanium implants), hearing and balance disorders including Epley manoeuvre for BPPV, nose and sinus problems, LASER treatment for nasal blockage, polyps, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and minimally invasive balloon sinuplasty. Children’s ENT disorders include tonsils, adenoids, glue ear and grommets.
Furthermore, Dr Fairley has taught clinical skills and in particular middle ear surgery to a generation of ENT registrars, many of whom are now established consultants in hospitals around the UK and other parts of the world. He has given numerous National and International presentations on his work. An early adopter of Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (titanium implants), he was founding President of the BAHA professionals group. He has served on the Clinical Audit and Practice Advisory Group of ENT UK/British Association of Otolaryngologists/Head & Neck Surgeons, and chaired the e-Learning Group of their Education and Training Committee. He is a reviewer for the Cochrane Collaboration and several international medical journals. He inaugurated the post of Survey Guardian for ENT UK. He is regularly appointed as an Expert Witness in medico-legal cases, and in fitness to practice cases by the UK General Medical Council.
