Top Tips for Living with a Hearing Aid

Getting a hearing aid can make a big difference to your day to day life. You might find it easier to follow conversations or to enjoy your favourite programmes on the TV. You could even find that you are more aware of the world around you as you will often be able to hear the sounds you were missing, such as birdsong.

However, it can take some time to get used to your new hearing aids. The hearing aid specialist will advise you on getting the most out of your hearing aids and taking good care of them, but here are some simple tips to get you started:

  • Give yourself some time to adjust to the new sounds and they way the hearing aids feel in your ear. Your hearing aid specialist may recommend slowly increasing the amount of time you wear them for over several weeks or months. Start with quiet environments and then try using them during conversations or in noisy places.

  • Make sure you know what the controls on your hearing aid do and remember to use them, for example if you have a T switch to use on the telephone.

  • Remember to change the batteries in your hearing aid when necessary. Having a spare at home is a good idea in case they run out unexpectedly.

  • Follow the cleaning and care instructions your hearing aid specialist gives you to ensure the devices work as well as possible, for as long as possible. You will usually need to wipe the hearing aid every day, but some devices require a more thorough cleaning. If you have a lot of problems with ear wax getting into your hearing aid, you might want to consult your ENT specialist as treatment could help.

  • Most hearing aids are designed to last for about five years, but you may need one sooner if your hearing changes or the device is damaged. Remember to return for a hearing check when your ENT specialist or hearing aid specialist recommends one.

  • If you have any questions or concerns about your hearing aid, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the clinic.
